In the world of fashion design, says the U.S. Department of Labor, employers seek individuals with a 2- or 4-year degree who are knowledgeable about textiles, fabrics, ornamentation, and fashion trends. Designers must have a strong sense of the esthetic: an eye for color and detail, a sense of balance and proportion, and an appreciation for beauty. Fashion designers also need excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Despite the advancement of computer-aided design, sketching ability remains an important advantage in fashion design. A good portfolio often is the deciding factor in getting a job.

The goal of the Fashion Design program at AIU is to develop creative and innovative designers who are equipped with the techniques of fine craftsmanship and attuned to the needs of the consumer. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design provides specialized training in sketching, garment construction, patternmaking, draping, computer-aided design, illustration and portfolio development. The program emphasizes creativity, mastering traditional skills and enhancing design or art skills with technology that is used in the fashion industry.

Challenging, Relevant Coursework

The BFA in Fashion Design features industry-relevant coursework taught by faculty members with real-world experience in the fashion industry. Key topics addressed in this degree program include patternmaking using computer-aided design and the business practices behind the fashion industry. Students are asked to develop a comprehensive business plan and to design their own collection of fashion wear.

Students who successfully complete the program should be able to:

  • Examine and discuss principles, terms, and issues in the fashion industry.
  • Create original fashion designs—either by hand or with computer-aided design software—that demonstrate creativity with design elements.
  • Analyze the quality of design, materials, and construction techniques that are used in commercially produced and handmade textiles, apparel, and accessories.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate use of measuring, marking, cutting, sewing, and pressing equipment and tools.
  • Discuss and apply processes used in the construction, tailoring/alteration, and fitting of patterns and clothes.
  • Create patterns through flat pattern and draping methods.
  • Discuss how consumer, market, and budget characteristics affect the formation, quality, and style of designs.
